Korihor, an anti-Christ, accused Alma (the younger), who served as chief judge of the government for a time and high priest in the church for even longer, of abusing his power by 'glutting [himself] on the labors of the people' (see Alma 30:31). This was, of course, utter nonsense (and Korihor knew it). Alma refutes the accusation with an interesting question:
Alma 30:34
34 And now, if we do not receive [any money] for our labors in the church, what doth it profit us to labor in the church save it were to declare the truth, that we may have rejoicings in the joy of our brethren?
So, why do you labor in the church?
Perhaps, like Alma, you simply want to declare the truth and rejoice with those who believe your testimony. Perhaps you love the feeling of being an instrument in God's hands. Perhaps you know that by turning your life over to God, he can make more of your life than you ever could? Perhaps you'd like to be able to feel 'at home' in one of the mansions the Lord has gone to prepare for your eventual return? All great reasons, and there are probably many more we could list.
So, if you find yourself struggling to muster up the courage or desire to accept the invitation to serve in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, remember that we get to be part of something grand, something more important than anything else going on in the world today!
"Yes, men and women who turn their lives over to God will discover that He can make a lot more out of their lives than they can. He will deepen their joys, expand their vision, quicken their minds, strengthen their muscles, lift their spirits, multiply their blessings, increase their opportunities, comfort their souls, raise up friends, and pour out peace. Whoever will lose his life in the service of God will find eternal life." Jesus Christ—Gifts and Expectations, By President Ezra Taft Benson
